The compact crossover segment is perhaps one of the populated vehicle segments today. With plenty of options available to shoppers, the research process can be long and strenuous. Fortunately, Hyundai introduced the 2016 Tucson, thus making the process all the simpler. After a fantastic 2015, the Tucson returns and builds on its predecessor’s successes. Refreshed design, improved overall efficiency, and updated safety features are just an inkling of the new iteration’s improvements. Let’s dive in.
Opening the door and hopping behind the Tucson’s wheel, you’re immediately greeted with a luxurious feel and soft-touch features. The premium materials include a wrapped instrument panel with an expanded layout, suggesting and providing roominess otherwise unknown in this segment. All switchgears have been upgraded to give the operator a refined feel while driving. Looking up, the blue sky above is in view for both driver and passenger alike with the available full-length panoramic sunroof. Cargo room has made quite the jump up to 877 litres of roomy space. Pack in more gear with the dual-level cargo floor, as well.
Following in the footsteps of the 2015 Genesis, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson also features the Fluid Sculpture 2.0 design theme – creating a statement-making, sporty look. Staring at the Tucson head-on, the aggressive, hexagonal-shaped grille is further enhanced by high-efficiency LED headlights. LEDs surround the experience, even gracing the door handles on some models.
The increased wheelbase and overall vehicle length provides you with a sleeker design, more interior flexibility, and a smoother ride. To dress it up even more, opt for the 19-inch alloy wheels spiced with a dynamic spoke design. Roof racks sit atop the Tucson, eager and ready to haul your gear. As the Tucson drives off, the LED taillights provide improved visibility and the chrome exhaust tips add that extra dash of class.
Coming standard on the Tucson is a five-inch colour LCD display, offering up all the information you may need during your trip. It also integrates some of your favorite apps, including Pandora Internet Radio and Yelp. Apple’s Siri “Eyes Free” integration is also available. The available 405-watt premium audio system pumps the sound of your favorite tunes to you and your passengers’ ears.
A recipient of the 2016 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ award AND A 5-Star Overall Crash Safety Rating, the Tucson rocks several safety technologies to keep you and your passengers protected. Features include AEB with pedestrian detection, Lane Departure Warning System, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-traffic Alert, Lane Change Assist, and much, much more. These features all operate in tandem to ensure you’re arriving at your destination safely and efficiently.
Available with many powertrain options, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson is yours to customize to your desires. From last year, improvements were made with efficiency in mind. Base models include the 2.0L, direct injected four-cylinder engine that produces 164 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. For the driving enthusiast, the Tucson offers SHIFTRONIC manual shifting mode and includes an overdrive lock-up torque converter for even better fuel economy.
Stepping up to the turbo engine, Hyundai pairs it with a first-in-segment seven-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission. This pushes it efficiency threshold even further, providing quick and seamless shifting and acceleration. Fuel economy is a combined 9.L/100 km for the Eco FWD models and a combined 9.2L/100 km for the FWD Sport and Limited turbo models.
